AGIOS NEKTARIOS
Saint Nektarios is the protector saint of Aegina. The monastery that is dedicated in his, abstains 6 Km from the harbour of the island. It is built in the place Xantas, opposite from the hill of Paleochoras. It is the most important religious monument of Aegina.
The monastery was established by the Metropolite Pentapoleos, Nektarios Kefalas, who is Known today as Saint Nektarios. He was founded the monastery at period 1904 – 1910. It was dedicated to Agia Triada ( the trinity) and built on the ruins of a previous Byzantine monastery.
There was lived for 13 years the saint Nektarios and after his death at 9 November 1920 he was burial at the precinct of the church.
His holy relic are looked after in the monastery. Thousands faithful visit every year the monastery in order to worship and to ask from the thaumaturge saint his help.
Under the old monastery has been built a imposing church, dedicated in his memory, which is one from the bigger in Greece.
